The Idaho Department of Water Resources
(IDWR) and Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), in cooperation
with various state and local agencies is in the process of updating 5th
and 6th field sub-watershed boundaries for the State of Idaho.
The purpose of this project is to
create sixth field watershed boundaries for the state of Idaho using the
USGS Interagency Guideline on Delineation of Watershed and
Subwatershed Hydrologic Unit Boundaries
standards, latest version dated March 1, 2002. The delineation
process will consist of the following procedures, but may be subject to
additional review unique to each Hydrologic Unit Boundary.
Each Hydrologic Unit Boundary is
assigned a steward or stewards who will create draft sixth field watershed
lines for a hydrologic unit. Statewide 24k DRG and hydrography data will
be utilized, along with NED Shaded Relief and aerial photos to determine
boundary lines. Polygons will be attributed
with name and watershed number pursuant to watershed standards.
After the draft delineation process is
complete, government and private individuals with local interest and
knowledge will be invited to participate in a coordination workshop for
each Hydrologic Unit. Information from neighboring states will also be
incorporated to insure boundary consistency. After agreement of all
interested parties, neighboring states and the technical working group,
the lines will be given a ‘draft approval status’ and are called
‘concept lines’. These concept lines will be reviewed and revised to
follow contour lines consistent with 1:24,000 scale data. Polygon
attributes will also be updated pursuant to watershed standards.
Final certified data will be
incorporated into the National Watershed Boundary Dataset, available in
both coverage and shapefile formats, using ArcInfo and ArcView software.
Draft lines, including linework for surrounding states, can be viewed on an Arc/IMS watershed server at
maps.idwr.idaho.gov/watersheds.
Please contact the watershed coordinator for each surrounding state to
obtain the most recent version of their linework, as these lines are
subject to change with updates and reviews.
