Implementing ArcIMS

IDWR has begun implementing ArcIMS for both internal and external applications. ArcIMS 3.0 has proven to be a useful tool, and an easy one with which to create applications. Configuring the software has been considerably more difficult.

The simplest implementation is to put all ArcIMS components on one server. However, IDWR uses the State of Idaho web server, which is outside the state firewall. That requires our ArcIMS implementation to use two servers.

The two-server configuration worked until applications were written that required large amounts of data. IDWR has approximately 50 GB of vector and image data that are accessed by various ArcIMS applications. We modified our ArcIMS configuration to include a third server to assure efficient data-access and good ArcIMS performance. This 3-server configuration is described in a pdf-format document.
